It's $5 Fundraiser Friday! Is that a thing? I don't know, but let's make it a thing. How far can you make $5 go?
Last October, Oregon Humane Society's Humane Law Enforcement team helped with a case of suspected animal neglect in Jackson County. Ten dogs, one of which is pictured below, were rescued and treated for extreme life-threatening conditions. More than 30 birds were also discovered on the property and OHS helped facilitate their transfer to specialized rescue groups. The dogs required individualized care, which ranged from mange to dental decay to gastrointestinal issues. After receiving care from the medical team at OHS they stayed with foster families until they recovered and were ready for adoption. In January, after nearly three months since bein rescued, the last one from this group found her new family. Pets at OHS are under no time limits. That means that they can take as much time as they need to get ready for adoption. This is just one of the many ways that your Doggie Dash donations are put to use at OHS. Donate today and maybe you can help save a life!
One of the questions I get asked the most about volunteering - How do you resist taking home a dog? Out of the almost ten years I have been at OHS, there has been only one dog that I have really, really wanted to bring home. Her name was Izzy. She was 7 years old, part pit bull and part piggy - not just because she was a bit of a chonk, but because she made cute, snorty pig noises when she was happy and on walks. And she had the cutest little wag and wiggle. She was a surrender because of a divorce/family breakup and was just the sweetest girl. At the time, Kirby and I were both unemployed, which gave us all the time in the world to dedicate to a dog. But it just wouldn’t have been a responsible decision to bring a dog into our home at that time, as much as my heart wanted it. So, I just spent extra time with Izzy on my shifts before she was eventually adopted. Then our cat Shakespeare came into our lives a few months later. If we had her, we may not have been able to take care of him. As they say, things happen for a reason.
It's Challenge Day! Subaru of Portland is matching donations this week and Fox 12 Oregon hosted a Challenge Day today at OHS. I was at the shelter this morning and one of the phone bank volunteers taking calls for the event. It was my first time doing that type of volunteering and I really enjoyed myself!
It's a match-a-thon! Donations are being matched to my fundraising page and OHS sponsors are matching donations made this week, April 3rd - April 7th. This is a rare opportunity to TRIPLE your donation!
