Event Rules for Dogs

For the health and safety of all dogs and people participating in WillaMutt Strut, please observe the following rules for canines attending the event with you:

  • If your pet is displaying any signs of illness, please leave them at home or consult your vet before attending the event.
  • Participating dogs must be currently licensed with proof of DHLPP and rabies vaccinations. You do not need to bring proof with you; if an incident occurs, you must be able to produce proof in a reasonable amount of time.
  • For safety reasons, “extend-a-leashes” will NOT be allowed. Dogs must be kept on a regular leash at all times. Leashes should be no more than six feet in length while on the course or at the festival. This event gets very crowded and longer leashes can be extremely hazardous.
  • The use of choke chains and prong collars are discouraged in alignment with our positive reinforcement training practices. Click here to read about why we discourage use of aversives.
  • Female dogs in heat are not permitted.
  • Race officials reserve the right to refuse entry to any dog whose behavior is observed to be potentially dangerous to others. Please use good judgment regarding the temperament of your pet so that this event will be safe and enjoyable for everyone.
  • Dogs younger than six months should not participate.
  • Be sure you and your dog are well-conditioned for this event, especially if you plan to run/walk.

Event Health & Safety Measures

Oregon Humane Society's first priority is the safety and health of pets, attendees, sponsors, vendors, volunteers, and staff.

  • We are monitoring the weather closely. The festival will have kiddie pools and water stations, in addition to a First Aid booth sponsored by VCA Salem.
    • If you have a smoosh-faced or young dog under one year old, consider skipping the walk/run and instead enjoy the festival.
    • Costumes are cute, but they can be hot. OHS staff and volunteers will gladly assist if you need an extra set of hands to help put on or take off your pup's costume.
    • Pavement, asphalt, metal, and even sand that have been heated by the sun can burn dogs' paw pads. Remember: if the surface is too hot for your bare hand or foot, it's too hot for your dog's feet.
    • Please visit our website for more tips on staying safe in warmer weather.
  • If your pet is displaying any signs of illness, please leave them at home or consult your vet before attending the event.
